Placement criteria

How the GDE prioritises placement

Placement depends on school capacity and the learner’s circumstances. The order published in the supplied registration notice is:

  1. 1

    Feeding area

    Learners who live within the school’s feeding area.

  2. 2

    Sibling at the school

    Learners with a brother or sister already attending the school.

  3. 3

    Parent works nearby

    Learners whose parent or guardian works within the school’s feeding area.

  4. 4

    Within 30 kilometres

    Learners who live within 30 km of the school.

  5. 5

    Further than 30 kilometres

    Learners who live more than 30 km from the school.

  • Learner’s birth certificate
  • Latest Grade 7 report, where applicable
  • Clinic immunisation card for Grade 1

Parent documents

  • Identity document of parent or parents
  • Proof of home address
  • Proof of work address if it is close to the school

If you rent your home

  • Municipal account not older than three months
  • Certified ID of the property owner
  • Owner’s municipal account, not older than three months
Work address: Provide a signed confirmation letter from the employer together with proof of the work address.

Follow the official process carefully and apply before the deadline published by the GDE.

Should I apply to more than one school?

Yes. Use the “Apply to More Schools” option. The poster advises parents to apply to more than one school, especially when living outside the feeding area.

Must one choice be in the feeding area?

Parents should include a school within their feeding area among their applications.

Can the Department verify my documents?

Yes. Schools and the Department may ask for uploaded documents to be verified, accepted or declined.
